History of the Club
The year 1951 began with the election of L. F. McCollum as
Director and First Vice President, and Claude A. Williams as a
Director, to fill vacancies on the Board. Also, an Advisory
Planning Committee was created. The following month, pursuant to
the terms of the Bylaws, terms of Directorships were chosen. To
serve one year were Fred J. Heyne, Jr., R. E. (Bob) Smith, and
Claude A. Williams. Two-year terms were to be served by David C.
Bintliff, Virgil Brill, L. F. McCollum and Marlin E. Sandlin.
Selected for three-year terms were E. O. Buck, Hugh Q. Buck,
Vernon W. Frost and Ralph A. Johnston.
The balance of 1951 saw the resignation of the
temporary Club manager and subsequent employment as General
Manager - on August 1 - of L. A. Upshaw, formerly manager of the
Williamsburg Inn in Virginia.
Because of the need for formulating policies and procedures
was for a time to hold precedence over the operational
requirements of a well established club, the Board of Directors
served continuously from 1951 through April, 1953, as the House
Committee. With the added judgment and counsel of the Advisory
Planning Committee, the Board performed all the functions later
to be handled by the several standing committees.
