History

Over 75 Years of Tradition

The Petroleum Club of Houston is the consequence of a vision, of a vigorous effort, and of a substantial accomplishment.  The accomplishment is the creation of one of the nation’s finest and most distinctive private clubs, towering high above Houston’s commercial avenues.

The vision was shared by Wilbur Ginther, Howard C. Warren, and Harris Underwood and their efforts crystallized on January 31, 1946. The inspiration for our landmark world-class Club was built from oil industry ingenuity and now through many generations, the Club combines its synergy with memberships which include energy industry professionals; medical, legal, and business professionals; professional women; and growth with young professionals.

On December 15, 1951, the Club was formally opened for business atop the Rice Hotel in downtown Houston. After twelve years of the Club providing comfortable, private Club quarters for the enjoyment of its members and their guests, the Club moved to the top three floors of the downtown Houston ExxonMobil building in 1963. Plans were laid for an exceptional new Club - “as new as tomorrow - as timeless as time” - and on February 16, 1963 a reception was held officially opening the Club.  Over the next decades, our Club gained an international reputation for fine food and excellent service, with guests and members from around the world.

In January 2015, the Petroleum Club of Houston moved to the top of the Total Plaza, 35th floor, 1201 Louisiana Street, in central downtown Houston. Our versatile and significant Club continues its international appeal and sustains its growth in the expansive Houston community.
